St Augustine, Ashen
The portaloo and stacked fencing in the churchyard made me think that they'd just finished some work, but when I rang the churchwarden she told me no, they'd just started. But If I still wanted to see inside she would come and unlock, and I did, so she did. All the furnishings were stacked and covered with dust sheets, the chancel is cordoned off by plastic sheets. it was very dusty, but I was able to photograph the rather odd 1610 memorial to Lucy Tallakerne and one of the brasses which was still accessible beneath the plastic sheeting. I stepped through into Pearson's fabulous chancel - remarkable to see such a great Victorian architect on such a small scale, and in East Anglia too. The glass is all by William Wailes, and must have been a complete commission. It must have cost a fabulous amount of money. Well worth seeing, but the church was now out of use until May, when the nave walls would have been replastered and repainted, so I would have to come back.
