This delicious little thatched church sits in a quiet village in the hills of north-east Essex. If it loooks like a barn that's been converted into a church then that is because this is exactly what happened here. Originally bulit at the end of the 16th Century, the barn was repurposed as a chapel of ease to Wenden Lofts parish church by Robert Wilkes of Lofts Hall in 1859. The interior is apporpirately rustic and chapel like, and contains the 18th Century birdbath font and 19th Century altar rails that came here from Wenden Lofts church when that was abandoned in the 1950s. It seems to be open every day and is well worth a short diversion from some of the Gothic glories in this corner of the county.
