All Saints, Great Holland

Alternatively, if you don't have flash enabled, you can go straight to the set for this church on flickr. A big 15th Century red brick tower that reminded me of Gestingthorpe. The church against it, however, is an entirely neo-Norman rebuilding by Arthur Blomfield in his early days in the 1860s. Pevsner describes it as dull, which is not unfair, but it felt loved and looked after. The church was not taking part in the Essex Ride and Stride event, but the visitors book confirmed that the church is open every day anyway. I must admit I was surprised that such a remote (and, frankly, dull) church had so many visitors. Incidentally, the year this was built, Blomfield's architectural assistant was Thomas Hardy, who almost certainly drew up the original plans. Simon Knott, September 2014
