St Andrew, Hatfield Peverel

Hatfield Peverel is a large housing estate dumped in the middle of nowhere. As soon as you step off the train, you know you are no longer in East Anglia. This is the South-East, the part of Essex indistinguishable from Kent. The church is actually in the grounds of the Hall, but the estate has gathered itself around. The church is of little interest, except that it contains a number of 14th Century monuments and also some continental glass. It was the nave of a much larger priory church. There was a car parked by the church, and when I looked through the glass of the porch I saw that the inner door was open and someone inside was arranging flowers! How mean-spirited! This probably tells you all you need to know about Hatfield Peverel. Fortunately, it was my last taste of inhospitality for some hours. No doubt they will moan if they ever get a break-in.
