St Mary, Little Baddow
I left suburban Chelmsford for the gently rolling meadows of the Chelmer and Blackwater. Chelmsford area churches tend to be open, and I was looking forward to Little Baddow which is well known for its memorials, but as I approached I could see it was covered in scaffolding and surrounded by a builders fence.
'This church is currently closed to the public' said the sign. The nave and chancel were encased in scaffolding, only the tower standing free. The website says they hope to have it back in use by June, but they'll be going some to get it out of its iron shell by then. A big church, and I was disappointed not to see inside, but a number of interesting headstones made up for it. I shall have to go back, the interior is an important one, and it is only a couple of miles from Chelmsford.
A few hundred yards off there is a lovely 18th Century chapel, very picturesque.Simon Knott, April 2018
