Beautiful little Norman church in very poor condition - ivy is growing over the windows, the gutters are sagging and I watched a jackdoor pop out of a hole in the roof. Not clear if it is still in use. Unusually for this part of Essex, this church is kept locked, as are its Roding neighbours White and Leaden, but all three have keyholder notices. I'm told that the church used to be open to pilgrims and strangers every day, and so perhaps its current locked status is just another sign of its decline, which is rather sad. Fantastic Norman south doorway, the biggest and best I've seen in Essex. BoE says recut, but if so they did a good job.
And then it was off into the hills again on the loneliest lanes yet.Simon Knott, April 2014
