Locked with a keyholder notice (four telephone numbers). I was here in May when the tower was covered in scaffolding. It is rather effective, an Essex belfry with a City of London tower top attached. The architect was Stephen Dykes Bower, responsible for the restoration of Great Yarmouth St Nicholas and the tower at Bury St Edmunds. He was organist here for 57 years, apparently, and lived in the big house to the west of the church. The parish is a joint one with Rickling, and today the most famous resident is celebrity chef Jamie Oliver.
Peeping through the window it didn't look worth waiting for a keyholder, so we headed across the parish to Rickling.
