A small church on the edge of the town of Wickford. Wickford church is open every day, but Runwell is locked, no keyholder notice.
A rugged, ragstone tower, the church itself is rebuilt and quite small beside the great tower. Oddly, the outer gates were hooked back, but the church door was locked. The same is true on other photographs I have seen where the photographer has said that the church was locked. Obviously a different benefice to Wickford, then, and it was tempting to make a joke about the irony of it being the church of a parish called Runwell, when it obviously isn't. But I resisted, you'll be pleased to know. And then out onto the great ridge which runs parallel to the Thames estuary.Simon Knott, August 2013
