The place is nothing more than a hamlet of half a dozen cottages, the church and the Hall strung out along the road between Roxwell and the Willingales. The church was built in 1754 (the date is on the east end) in red brick on the site of its medieval predecessor. It looks very elegant with its arched windows, typical of the period. The church was closed in the 1960s, and converted into a private house in 1973.
The name of the hamlet is probably derived from 'shallow beaulieu', and is perhaps the oddest in a county with more than its fair share of curious two word placenames. Chignall Smealey, Willingale Spain and Willingale Doe are also within a couple of miles.Simon Knott, April 2014
