Thomas Moody Mortlock (1841 -1919). My Mother's Father's Mother's Father. My Great-Great-Grandfather.


1841: Thomas Moody Mortlock was born in Swavesey, Cambridgeshire, a parish which adjoins the Huntingdonshire border. He was not baptised, and this appears to be the influence of his non-conformist grandmother.

 


1851 Census:

Thomas was nine years old at the time of the 1851 census. The Mortlocks lived at Church Street, Swavesey, Cambridgeshire.

Thomas's father John is shown as a mealsman, a dealer in cereals and grain. He was 58 years old. His mother Mary was 47.

Thomas was the sixth of seven children at the time of the 1851 census. Phebe was 21, Sarah was 18, John was 14, Mary Ann was 13, Hephzibah was 11 and Jane was 7. There was also Joseph Fear, shown as a nephew of John Mortlock, who was 12 years old.

Thomas was born at Swavesey in Cambridgeshire, as were the rest of the family. The transcript for their entry is here.

 



1861:
Thomas married Eliza Mansfield at St John the Baptist, Holywell-cum-Needingworth, Huntingdonshire on the 16th January. Their son Samuel was born two months later.


 


1861 Census:

Thomas was nineteen years old at the time of the 1861 census. He was married, but still living with his parents. The Mortlocks lived at High Street, Swavesey, Cambridgeshire.

Thomas is shown as a bricklayer's assistant. His wife Eliza was 21. Thomas's father John Mortlock is shown as a baker and flour dealer. He was 68 years old. John's mother Mary was 57 years old.

Thomas was the third of three children at the time of the 1861 census. Phebe was 31, Hephzibah was 21. Phebe is shown as an idiot, Hephzibah as a baker's assistant. Thomas and Eliza had a child of their own, Samuel, who was a month old.

Thomas was born at Swavesey in Cambridgeshire, as were the rest of the family, except for his wife Eliza who was born at Needingworth, Huntingdonshire. Despite being in different counties, Swavesey and Needingworth are adjacent villages. The transcript for their entry is here.

 
 


1871 Census:

Thomas was twenty-eight years old at the time of the 1871 census. He lived with his wife and children at High Street, Holywell with Needingworth in Huntingdonshire.

Thomas is shown as a bricklayer. His wife Eliza was 29.

Thomas had five children at the time of the 1871 census: Samuel was 10, Emma was 8, Hepzibah was 7, Lizzie (Eliza, my great-grandmother) was 5 and Thomas was 3.

Thomas was born at Swavesey in Cambridgeshire, as was Samuel. The rest of the family were born at Needingworth in Huntingdonshire. Despite being in different counties, Swavesey and Needingworth are adjacent villages. The transcript for their entry is here.

Thomas's parents John and Mary Mortlock lived at High Street, Swavesey, Cambridgeshire, in the adjacent village. John was seventy-eight years old, and is shown, curiously, as a retired famer; he had been a farmer at the time of the 1841 census. Mary, aged 67, is shown as a farmer's wife. They still had Phebe at home, aged 41. She was shown as an idiot from birth. Also living with them was John H William Mortlock, aged 8, and born at Aldershot. 1873:
Thomas was baptised on 11th April at St John the Baptist, Holywell-cum-Needingworth, Huntingdonshire. He was 31 years old. All the children would be baptised in one go on the 1st June of the same year.


1881 Census:

Thomas was thirty-nine years old at the time of the 1881 census. The Mortlocks still lived at High Street, Holywell with Needingworth in Huntingdonshire.

Thomas is shown as a bricklayer. His wife Eliza was forty years old.

The Mortlock family had nine children living home at the time of the 1881 census. They were Samuel 20, Thomas 13, Kate 9, John 7, Jannett 5, Julia 4 , Ruth 3, Martha 1 and an unnamed infant, almost certainly Alice, aged 3 days.

Thomas's place of birth is shown as Swavesey, Cambridgeshire, as was Samuel's. All the rest of the family were born at Needingworth, Huntingdonshire. Despite being in different counties, Swavesey and Needingworth are adjacent villages. The transcript for their entry is here.

His daughter Eliza, my great-grandmother, was fifteen years old at the time of the 1881 census. She was living as a servant in the family of James Walter Stephens at Alexandra Place, St Ives, Huntingdonshire.

Eliza is shown as a general servant (domestic). James Stephens was a Grocer and Draper, aged 29. His wife Emma was 33.

Eliza was born at Needingworth in Huntingdonshire, today modern Cambridgeshire. James Stephens was born in St Ives. His wife Emma was born in Needingworth, the same as Eliza (significant?). They had three children born in Fenstanton and St Ives. The transcript for their entry is here.

 
 


1891 Census:

Thomas was forty-nine years old at the time of the 1891 census. His birth year is given as 1842. The Mortlocks lived at Front Street, Holywell with Needingworth in Huntingdonshire.

Thomas is shown as a bricklayer. His wife Eliza was fifty years old, her birth year given as 1841.

The Mortlock family had six children living home at the time of the 1891 census. They were Thomas 23, John 17, Julia 14 , Ruth 13, Martha 11 and Alice 10. His daughter Eliza, my great-grandmother, had already married and left home.

Thomas's place of birth is shown as Swavesey, Cambridgeshire. All the rest of the family were born at Needingworth, Huntingdonshire. The transcript for their entry is here.

 
 


1901 Census:

Thomas was fifty-nine years old at the time of the 1891 census. The Mortlocks still lived at Front Street, Holywell with Needingworth in Huntingdonshire.

Thomas is shown as a bricklayer. His wife Eliza was sixty years old.

The Mortlock family had two children living home at the time of the 1891 census. They were Martha 21 and Alice 19. Martha is shown as an assistant domestic, Alice as a dressmaker. Also living with them were Thomas and Florence Smith, shown as their grandchildren. Thomas was 19, and a brickleyer's asssistant. Florence was 13.

Thomas's place of birth is shown as Swavesey, Cambridgeshire. All the rest of the family were born at Needingworth, Huntingdonshire. The Smith children were born at Eaton Socon in Bedfordshire. 1911 Census:

Thomas was sixty-nine years old at the time of the 1891 census. The Mortlocks lived at The Carpenters Arms, Bluntisham Road, Holywell with Needingworth in Huntingdonshire.

Thomas is shown as a bricklayer, working under his own account (ie self-employed). His wife Eliza was seventy one years old.

The Mortlock family had one child living home at the time of the 1891 census, Martha aged 31 She is shown as assisting at home.

1919:
Thomas died on 3rd March 1919. He was 78 years old. He was buried in Holywell-cum-Needingworth churchyard where his headstone survives on the western boundary.
