William Wiseman
(1816-1896). My Father's Mother's Father's
Mother's Father. My Great-Great-Great-Grandfather.
William was born in the Suffolk town of Mildenhall, not
far from Ely. He was an adult by the time he appears in
Ely on the first proper census in 1841, and recently
married. The family appear to have spent the rest of
their lives in Ely. William died at the age of 80, and
was buried in Ely Cemetery.
1816:
William Wiseman was born in Mildenhall, Suffolk.

1841:
On 4th February, William married
Elizabeth Appleyard in the the Lady Chapel of Ely
Cathedral. They both gave their address as Ship
Lane.

census:
William was
twenty-five years old at the time
of the 1841 census. he was an
agricultural labourer. The
Wisemans were living in Hatch's
Cottage, Stuntney, Ely,
Cambridgeshire.
His wife
Elizabeth was 23 years old. They
were the only two people in the
household. William was born
outside of Cambridgeshire,
Elizabeth was born in
Cambridgeshire.

1851
census:
William was
thirty-eight years old at the
time of the 1851 census. He was
an Agricultural Labourer. The
Wiseman family were living in Newnham
Road, Ely, Cambridgeshire.
His wife
Elizabeth was was 33 years old.
There were five children at home
on the night of the census.
Abraham was 8, Thomas was 6,
Susan was 4, Emma was 2, Benjamin
was 3 months old.
William was
born in Mildenhall, Suffolk.
Everyone else in the family was
born in Ely, Cambridgeshire.

1853: The birth of William and
Elizabeth's daughter Alice, my
great-great-grandmother, is recorded in Ely in
the fourth quarter. Alice was baptised in the
Lady Chapel of Ely cathedral on 22nd October
1854. The family's address was given as Common
Muck Hill, Ely.
1861 census: the 1861 census for
Ely is lost. William would have been forty eight
years old.
1866: The Cambridge
Independent Press recorded that an Elizabeth
Earith was fined for damaging a celery crop
belonging to William Wiseman, an agricultural
labourer of Ely Trinity. Five years earlier, a
Mary Ann Earith, presumably a member of the same
family, was fined for an assault on William's
wife Elizabeth.
1871
census:
William was
fifty five years old at the time of the 1871
census. He is shown as a labourer (unemployed).
The Wiseman family were living in Victoria
Street, Ely, Cambridgeshire.
His wife
Elizabeth was 48.There were four children living
at home on the night of the census. Abraham was
29 and is shown as a labourer, Alice was 17,
Benjamin was 12 and James was 4.
William was
born in Mildenhall, Suffolk. All the rest of the
family were born in Ely, Cambridgeshire. You can

1881 census:
William was sixty-four
years old at the time of the 1881 census. He is
shown as a labourer. The Wiseman family were
living in Broad Street, Ely,
Cambridgeshire.
His wife Elizabeth was 60
years old. Two of their sons were living at home,
Abraham aged 39 and James aged 14, both of them
labourers.
William was born in
Mildenhall, Suffolk. All the rest of the family
were born in Ely, Cambridgeshire.

1891 census. He is shown as a labourer.

boilermaker.

17th October in plot D601 of Ely Cemetery.
