on the Cornwell family tree
part of the
Cornwell family story

married to Susan Charles

father of William Cornell

William Cornall
(1785 -1875). My Mother's Father's Father's Father's Father. My Great-Great-Great-Grandfather.

William was born in Harston to the south of Cambridge in 1785, but by 1811 was in Histon to the north of the city to marry local girl Susan Charles. He appears to have spent the rest of his life there. His name, and that of his children, is variously spelled Cornall, Cornel, Cornell, Cornwell and Cornhile in the Histon parish registers and census returns. However, The fact that William was not born in Histon makes the family easier to trace on the censuses. He died in 1875 and was probably buried in the new Histon & Impington cememtery.

1785: William was born in Harston, Cambridgeshire.

1811: On 28th October, William married Susan Charles at St Andrew's church, Histon. They were both listed as of this parish.

1812: On 26th April, William and Susan's son James was baptised at St Andrew's church, Histon. Their surname was spelt Cornel.

1814: On 7th August, William and Susan's daughter Elizabeth was baptised at St Andrew's church, Histon. Their surname was spelt Cornwell.

1817: On 20th April, William and Susan's son Charles was baptised at St Andrew's church, Histon. Their surname was spelt Cornel.

1819: On 12th December, William and Susan's son William, my great-great-grandfather, was privately baptised. He was received into St Andrew's church, Histon on 26th December. Their surname was spelt Cornell.

1822: On 31st March, William and Susan's daughter Sarah was baptised at St Andrew's church, Histon. Their surname was spelt Cornell.

1825: On 25th January, William and Susan's daughter Mary was baptised at St Andrew's church, Histon. Their surname was spelt Cornell, but there is a note in the register 'or Cornwall'. Confusingly, the Bishops Transcripts copy of the register records the name as Cornal! The godparents were Mary Diver and Thomas and Jane Charles. Mary died at the age of five in 1830, and was buried in Histon churchyard on 14th January, the same week as her cousins William and James, also children.

1827: On 18th March, William and Susan's son Thomas was baptised at St Andrew's church, Histon. Their surname was spelt Cornall.

1831: On 20th January, William and Susan's daughter Mary Ann was baptised at St Andrew's church, Histon. Their surname was spelt Cornall. She died at the age of six weeks, and was buried in Histon churchyard on 3rd March. It appears that there were no more children.
