Elizabeth Farrington
(1799-1862). My Mother's Father's Father's Mother's Mother. My Great-Great-Great-Grandmother.

Elizabeth Farrington was the daughter of Hannah Anderson, who had been born Hannah Bavey, but had married John Anderson in Bourn, Cambridgeshire. John died in 1796, and Hannah then embarked upon a relationship with a local farmer, William Farrington, who was estranged from his wife. They produced six illegitimate children, one of whom was Elizabeth. Eventually, William's first wife died in 1810, and within days William and Hannah were married, making the children legitimate and changing all their surnames to Farrington. Elizabeth married William Huckell, from Comberton in Cambridgeshire, in 1818. On census data, she appears to give an age some 15 years in advance of her own, which confuses her with an earlier Elizabeth Farrington of Bourn who had actually died young. William died in 1848, and by 1851 Elizabeth was living as a nurse and then as a housekeeper for the family of her daughter Sarah in Comberton, Cambridgeshire. Her husband, described as a soldier on the marriage entry for his daughter Frances, was not on any census with her. She died in 1862, and was buried in Comberton churchyard.

  Bourn font
1799:
On 17th March, Elizabeth was baptised as Elizabeth Anderson at St Mary's church, Bourn, Cambridgeshire.

1810: On 10th May, Elizabeth's parents William Farrington and Hannah Anderson were married at St Mary's church, Bourn, Cambridgeshire. Elizabeth was eleven years old.

1818: on 26th January Elizabeth married William Huckell at St Mary's church, Bourn, Cambridgeshire. Later in the year, their first child Sarah was baptised in the same church.

1821: Elizabeth and William's daughter Jane was baptised at St Mary's church, Bourn, Cambridgeshire.

1824: On 22nd February, Elizabeth and William's daughter Frances, my great-great-grandmother, was baptised at St Mary's church, Bourn, Cambridgeshire.

Between 1824 and 1831, the family moved from Bourn to Comberton.

1831: Elizabeth and William's son John was baptised at St Mary's church, Comberton, Cambridgeshire. He was buried in Comberton churchyard in 1833 at the age of 2.

1835: Elizabeth and William's daughter Emma was baptised at St Mary's church, Comberton, Cambridgeshire.

1841 Census:

Elizabeth was fifty-five years old at the time of the 1841 census. The Huckel family were living on Green Street, Comberton, Cambridgeshire.

Her husband William was not at home on census night (we know he was a soldier). There were three children living in the household at the time of the 1841 census: Jane was 20, Frances was 15 and William (possibly Jane's son) was 2.

All the household were born in Cambridgeshire. The transcript for their entry is here.

1842: my great-great-grandparents get married
1842: Elizabeth's daughter Frances married William Cornell of Histon on the 4th July at St Andrew's church, Histon, Cambridgeshire. The register gives her surname as Huckle. William is shown as being of full age and his occupation is given as labourer. Frances is shown as being under age (that is to say, not yet 21). Her father William is shown as a soldier.

1848: In September, Elizabeth's husband William died, and was buried in Comberton churchyard on 21st September.

1851 Census:

Elizabeth was sixty-five years old at the time of the 1841 census. She was living in the household of her son-in-law Richard Marshall in Cambridge Lane, Comberton, Cambridgeshire.

Richard Marshall was a 37 year old agricultural labourer. His wife Sarah, Elizabeth's daughter, was 32. Elizabeth's relationship to the head of the household is shown as nurse (there were six children aged 12 and under in the household). She describes herself as married rather than widowed, and her status as a pauper. Her husband William was not in the household on census night.

Elizabeth was born in Bourn, Cambridgeshire, and the rest of the household were born in Comberton, Cambridgeshire.

1861 Census:

Elizabeth was seventy-four years old at the time of the 1861 census. he described herself as a widow. She was living in the household of Thomas Hart at Church Street, Comberton, Cambridgeshire.

Thomas Hart was a 75 year old widower and pauper. Elizabeth gave her relationship to him as housekeeper, though she was probably housekeeper to the Marshall family (see 1851) who were living next door. Also in the household was Thomas Hart's 29 year old daughter-in-law Ann Hart and her two young children.

Comberton
1862: In March, Elizabeth died. She was buried in Comberton churchyard on 23rd March. Her age was given as 75, but she was probably 63.
