Father of George Waters

Thomas Waters
(1804-1887). My Father's Father's Mother's Father's Father. My Great-Great-Great-Grandfather.

    Newington font Newington
1804: Thomas Waters was baptised at St Mary's church, Newington, Kent on 19th February, the son of John and Elizabeth Waters. His father's occupation was labourer. It is possible that Thomas was no longer an infant when he was baptised; at censuses he would regularly give an age too old for it to be correct if 1804 was his birth date.

1828-9: Thomas and Mary Waters's daughter Mary was born in about 1829, suggesting a marriage date of 1828-29 when Mary was in her late teens. The marriage was not at Newington, but may have been at Mary's home parish of Borden.

1832: The baptism of Thomas and Mary's daughter Sarah is recorded in the Newington registers.

1841 census:

Thomas was forty-four at the time of the 1841 census. The Waters family were living at Libet Wells, Newington, Kent.

Thomas is shown as an agricultural labourer. His wife Mary was 30.

There were four children. Mary aged 12, Sarah aged 8, Thomas aged 4 and Frances, aged 3.

All members of the household were born in Kent. The transcript for their entry is here.

1849
: Thomas's youngest son, my great-great-grandfather George Herbert Waters was born in Lower Halstow, Kent, just outside of Newington. He was baptised (and recorded as George Albert) at St Margaret's church on 4th February, the son of Thomas and Mary Waters. Thomas's occupation was shown as a labourer.

1851 census:

Thomas was fifty at the time of the 1851 census. The Waters family were living at Lower Halstow, Kent.

Thomas is shown as a labourer. His wife Mary was 40.

There were three children. Thomas was 13, Frances (presumably a different Frances from the 1841 census - she was baptised at Newington in 1839) was 2 and George was 2.

Thomas was born in Newington, Kent, as was the younger Thomas and Frances. Mary was born in Borden, Kent. George was born at Halstow in Kent. The transcript for their entry is here.

1861 census:

Thomas was sixty-one at the time of the 1861 census. The Waters family were living at Lower Halstow, Kent.

Thomas is shown as an agricultural labourer. His wife Mary was 50.

George was the only child living at home, and he was 12 years old.

Thomas was born in Newington, Kent. Mary was born in Borden, Kent. George was born at Halstow in Kent. The transcript for their entry is here.

1871 census:

Thomas was seventy-five at the time of the 1871 census. The family were living in Church Lane, Newington, Kent.

Thomas was shown as unemployed. His wife Mary was 63.

Thomas was born in Newington, Kent. Mary was born in Borden, Kent. The transcript for their entry is here. Thomas and Mary's son Thomas Jr was also living in Newington, with his wife Jane and 1 year old daughter Emma.

1871:
Thomas and Mary's son George, my great-great-grandfather, married Mary Ann Harrall at St Mary's church, Newington, Kent on the 15th October. He gave his occupation as engineer. The parents of the couple, Thomas Waters and John Harrall, were both described as labourers. The witnesses were R Croucher and Emily Elliott. George marked the register with a cross - that is to say, he was illiterate. Nobody else signed the register, which was filled in entirely by the minister.

1881 census:

Thomas was eighty-two years old at the time of the 1881 census. The Waters family were living at Church Lane, Newington, Kent.

Thomas is shown as an agricultural labourer. His wife Mary was 70.

Thomas was born at Newington, Kent. His wife Mary was born at Borden, Kent. Their entry is here.

1887: Thomas died on the 23rd May in Newington, Kent. He was said to be 88 years old.
