1811: Mary
was born at Borden, Kent.
1828-9: Mary and Thomas Waters's
daughter Mary was born in about 1829, suggesting
a marriage date of 1828-29. The marriage was not
at Newington, but may have been at Mary's home
parish of Borden.
1832: the baptism of Mary's
daughter Sarah is recorded in the Newington
registers.

1841 census:
Mary
was thirty at the time of the 1841
census. The Waters family were living at Libet
Wells, Newington, Kent.
Her
husband Thomas is shown as an agricultural
labourer. He was 44.
There
were four children. Mary aged 12, Sarah
aged 8, Thomas aged 4 and Frances, aged
3.

1849: Mary's youngest son, my
great-great-grandfather George Herbert Waters was
born in Lower Halstow, Kent, just outside of
Newington. He was baptised (and recorded as
George Albert) at St Margaret's church on 4th
February, the son of Thomas and Mary Waters.
Thomas's occupation was shown as a labourer.

the time of the 1851 census. The
Waters family were living at Lower
Halstow, Kent.
Her husband Thomas
is shown as a labourer.
He was 50 years old.
There were three
children. Thomas was 13, Frances
was 10 and George was 2.

Kent. Everyone else was
born at Newington, Kent, except
for George who was born at

1871: Thomas and Mary's son
George, my great-great-grandfather,
married Mary Ann Harrall at St
Mary's church, Newington, Kent
on the 15th October. He gave his
occupation as engineer. The parents of
the couple, Thomas Waters and John
Harrall, were both described as
labourers. The witnesses were R Croucher
and Emily Elliott. George marked the
register with a cross - that is to say,
he was illiterate. Nobody else signed the
register, which was filled in entirely by
the minister.

Mary was
seventy years old at the
time of the 1881 census.
The Waters family were
living at Church
Lane, Newington, Kent.
Her husband
Thomas is shown as an agricultural
labourer. He was
82.
