John Harrall
(1815-1887). My Father's Father's Mother's Mother's Father. My Great-Great-Great-Grandfather.

1815: John was born on 18th January at Hoo St Werbegh, Kent, and baptised at Zoar Chapel, Strood on 5th March. This shows that his parents Daniel and Sophia Harrall were non-conformists. Their surname was spelt Harrall, corrected from Harald by Thomas Drew, protestant dissenting minister.

1837: John's mother Sophia died and was buried on 8th June at St Werbegh, Hoo. She was 46 years old. The following year his father Daniel remarried, to Mary Grigsby, who was eight years younger than him.

1841 Census:

John was twenty-five years old at the time of the 1841 census. The Harrall family were living at Windmill Hill, Hoo, Kent. They appear on the census as Harrel.

John is shown as a Maltman. His father Daniel is shown as a farmer. Daniel was 50 years old, his wife Mary was 42.

John was the oldest of six children. Jemima was 20, George was 15, Jane was 13, Maria was 10, William was 4. All of the family were born in Kent. Their entry is here.

  Higham St Mary
1847: John
married Mary Anne Martin on the 17th October at St Mary's church, Higham, Kent. John's sister Maria was one of the witnesses.

1851 census:

John was thirty-four years old at the time of the 1851 census. The Harrall family were living at Upper Higham, Kent. They appear on the census as Harroll.

John is shown as a farm labourer. His wife Mary Ann was 25.

Their daughter Mary Ann was the only child, aged 8 months.

John was born at Hoo, Kent. His wife and daughter were both born at Higham, Kent. The transcript for their entry is here.

1861 census:

John was forty-three years old at the time of the 1861 census. The Harrall family were living at Upper Higham, Kent.

John is shown as an agricultural labourer. His wife Mary Ann was 35.

There were three children. Mary Ann was 10, George was 2 and Sophia was 1 month old. There seems an unusually large gap between the two older children.

John was born at Hoo, Kent , while the rest of the family were born at Higham, Kent. The transcript for their entry is here.

1871 census:

John was fifty-three years old at the time of the 1871 census. The Harrall family were living at Church Lane, Newington, Kent.

John is shown as an agricultural labourer. His wife Mary Ann was 45.

There were four children. Mary Ann was 21, George was 12, Sophia was 10 and Walter was 7.

John was born at Hoo, Kent, while the rest of the family were born in Higham, Kent. The transcript for their entry is here.

1881 census:

John was sixty-three years old at the time of the 1881 census. He was a widower. The family were living at 3 Higham Place, Higham, Kent.

John had two children. Sophia was 20 and Walter was 18.

John was born at Hoo, Kent, while the rest of the family were born in Higham, Kent. The transcript for their entry is here.

1887: John died in Strood, Kent. He was 70 years old. It is likely he was staying with his daughter Mary Ann and her husband George Waters in Broads Terrace, just off of the London Road. He was buried beside his wife at St Mary's, Higham on 17th November.
