1815: John
was born on 18th January at Hoo St
Werbegh, Kent, and baptised at Zoar Chapel, Strood on 5th March. This shows that his
parents Daniel and Sophia Harrall were
non-conformists. Their surname was spelt Harrall,
corrected from Harald by Thomas Drew,
protestant dissenting minister.
1837: John's mother Sophia died
and was buried on 8th June at St Werbegh, Hoo.
She was 46 years old. The following year his
father Daniel remarried, to Mary Grigsby, who was
eight years younger than him.
1841 Census:John was twenty-five years old at
the time of the 1841 census. The Harrall family
were living at Windmill Hill, Hoo, Kent. They
appear on the census as Harrel.
John is shown as a Maltman.
His father Daniel is shown as a farmer. Daniel
was 50 years old, his wife Mary was 42.
John was the oldest of six
children. Jemima was 20, George was 15, Jane was
13, Maria was 10, William was 4. All of the
family were born in Kent. Their entry is here.

1847: John married Mary Anne Martin on the 17th October at St
Mary's church, Higham, Kent. John's
sister Maria was one of the witnesses.

1851 census:
John
was thirty-four years old at the time of
the 1851 census. The Harrall family were
living at Upper Higham, Kent.
They appear on the census as Harroll.
John
is shown as a farm labourer.
His wife Mary Ann was 25.
Their
daughter Mary Ann was the only child,
aged 8 months.
John
was born at Hoo, Kent.
His wife and daughter were both born at
Higham, Kent. The transcript for their

census:
John was forty-three
years old at the time of the 1861
census. The Harrall family were
living at Upper Higham,
Kent.
John is shown as an agricultural
labourer. His wife Mary
Ann was 35.
There were three
children. Mary Ann was 10, George
was 2 and Sophia was 1 month old.
There seems an unusually large
gap between the two older
children.
John was born at Hoo,
Kent , while the rest of
the family were born at Higham,

was 7.
