1821: John
was born in Horseheath, Cambridgeshire.
He was baptised in All Saints Church
on 18th July. His parents were Thomas and Mary
Carter. Thomas was from Castle Camps and Mary
from Linton. They had been married in 1811 in
Shudy Camps church. In censuses, John would give
his birthplace as Shudy Camps, which is the
adjacent parish.
1840: John married Rebecca Lucas in Shudy
Camps, Cambridgeshire on the 16th May.
Both were under age, and both signed the register
with a cross. The witnesses were John Suttle and
Elizabeth Carter.
1841: Their daughter, my
great-great-grandmother Mary Ann, was born on the
13th August. She was baptised on 23rd January
1842 in Shudy Camps parish church.

census: John was thirty-one years
old at the time of the 1851 census. The
census gives the family's address as Church
End, Shudy Camps, Cambridgeshire.
John was working as
an agricultural labourer.
His wife Rebecca was 30 years old.
John
had seven children at home at the time of
the 1851 census. Mary aged 9, George aged
8, James aged 7, Jane aged 6, Harriet
aged 5, Charles aged 4 and Henry aged 1.
John
gave his birthplace as Shudy
Camps, Cambridgeshire, as for

1861 census: John was forty-one years old at the
time of the 1861 census. The census gives the
family's address as The Grange, Duxford,
Cambridgeshire.
John was working as a farm
labourer. His wife Rebecca was 42 years
old.
John had nine
children at home at the time of the 1861 census.
George aged 18, James aged 17, Harriet aged 15,
Charles aged 13, Joseph aged 10, Jarvis aged 6,
Julia aged 4, Fanny aged 3 and Elijah aged 1.
George, James, Harriet, Charles and Joseph are
all shown as farm workers. Mary Ann, Jane and
Henry who appeared on the 1851 census, are no
longer at home. Mary Ann was in service, and so
probably was Jane. Henry may well be dead.
John was born
at Horseheath, Cambridgeshire.
All the rest of the family were born at Shudy
Camps, Cambridgeshire, except for Elijah who was

Neighbours of
the Carter family were the Reynolds family. Among
them was 20 year old Robert Reynolds, who would
marry John's daughter Mary Ann in 1864. The

John's daughter Mary Ann,
my great-great-grandmother, was nineteen years
old at the time of the 1861 census. She is shown
in the return as Ann. She was working as a
nursemaid in the household of George Jonas, a
farmer of 400 acres, at St
Peter's Street, Duxford, Cambridgeshire.
As well as the Jonases and
their children, the household contained a
governess, a cook and a housemaid, all girls from
local villages.

old. her name is given as Rebekah. She is also

Joseph aged 20, Jarvis aged 16, Julia aged 14,
Elijah aged 12, John aged 9 and William aged 7.
Joseph, Jarvis and Elijah are all shown as
agricultural labourers.

were James and Abigail Reynolds, parents
of Mary Ann's husband Robert.
