Rebecca Lucas (1820-1904). My Mother's Mother's Father's Mother's Mother. My Great-Great-Great-Grandmother.

  1820: Rebecca was born in Shudy Camps, Cambridgeshire, probably towards the end of the year. Her mother was Mary Lucas.

1821: Rebecca was baptised at Shudy Camps, Cambridgeshire on 11th February. She was baptised under the name Rebecca Suttle. Her mother, Mary Lucas, had married James Suttle at Shudy Camps on Christmas Day 1820, and it seems a fair assumption that James Suttle was Rebecca's father.


1840: Rebecca married John Carter in Shudy Camps, Cambridgeshire on the 16th May. She gave her maiden name as Rebecca Lucas rather than Suttle. Both were under age, and both signed the register with a cross. The witnesses were John Suttle and Elizabeth Carter.


1841: Their daughter, my great-great-grandmother Mary Ann, was born on the 13th August. She was baptised on 23rd January 1842 in Shudy Camps parish church.

 
1851 census:

Rebecca was thirty years old at the time of the 1851 census. The census gives the family's address as Church End, Shudy Camps, Cambridgeshire.

Her husband John was working as an agricultural labourer. He was 31 years old.

Rebecca had seven children at home at the time of the 1851 census. Mary aged 9, George aged 8, James aged 7, Jane aged 6, Harriet aged 5, Charles aged 4 and Henry aged 1.

Rebecca gave her birthplace as as Shudy Camps, Cambridgeshire, as for all the family. The transcript for their entry is here.

 
 
1861 census:

Rebecca was forty-two years old at the time of the 1861 census. The census gives the family's address as The Grange, Duxford, Cambridgeshire.

Her husband John was working as a farm labourer. He was 41 years old.

Rebecca had nine children at home at the time of the 1861 census. George aged 18, James aged 17, Harriet aged 15, Charles aged 13, Joseph aged 10, Jarvis aged 6, Julia aged 4, Fanny aged 3 and Elijah aged 1. George, James, Harriet, Charles and Joseph are all shown as farm workers. Mary Ann, Jane and Henry who appeared on the 1851 census, are no longer at home. Mary Ann was in service, and so probably was Jane. Henry may well be dead.

Rebecca was born at Shudy Camps, Cambridgeshire. Her husband was born at Horseheath, Cambridgeshire. All the rest of the family were born at Shudy Camps, except for Elijah who was born in Duxford. The entry is here and here.

Neighbours of the Carter family were the Reynolds family. Among them was 20 year old Robert Reynolds, who would marry Rebecca's daughter Mary Ann in 1864. The transcript of the entry for their household is here, and they can also be seen on the entry page for the Carter family.

Rebecca's daughter Mary Ann, my great-great-grandmother, was nineteen years old at the time of the 1861 census. She is shown in the return as Ann. She was working as a nursemaid in the household of George Jonas, a farmer of 400 acres, at St Peter's Street, Duxford, Cambridgeshire.

As well as the Jonases and their children, the household contained a governess, a cook and a housemaid, all girls from local villages.

Rebecca was fifty years old at the time of the 1871 census. The census gives the family's address as Duxford, Cambridgeshire. Her name is given as Rebekah. She is shown as an agricultural labourer..

Her husband John was also working as an agricultural labourer. He was 49 years old.

Rebecca had six children at home at the time of the 1871 census. Joseph aged 20, Jarvis aged 16, Julia aged 14, Elijah aged 12, John aged 9 and William aged 7. Joseph, Jarvis and Elijah are all shown as agricultural labourers.

Rebecca was born at Shudy Camps, Cambridgeshire. Her husband was born at Horseheath, Cambridgeshire. The three oldest children were born in Shudy Camps, while the youngest three were born in Duxford, Cambridgeshire. Their entry is here.

her husband John was also working as an agricultural labourer. He was 59 years old.

Rebecca had three children at home at the time of the 1881 census. Elijah aged 22, John aged 19 and William aged 17. They are all shown as agricultural labourers. Their brother Jarvis and his wife lived in the next cottage, and in the next cottage were James and Abigail Reynolds, parents of Mary Ann's husband Robert.

Rebecca was sixty-eight years old at the time of the 1891 census. The census gives the family's address as Cottage, Brands Farm, Duxford Grange, Cambridgeshire.

Her husband John was working as a farm bailiff. His wife Rebecca was 68 years old.

Rebecca had two children at home at the time of the 1891 census. One was her son John, who was 31 years old, and is shown as a widower. The other was her grandson George, who was aged 5, and was probably John's son. John is shown as an agricultural labourer. Jarvis and Elijah were living in adjacent cottages with their families.

Her husband John was also 81 years old.

Rebecca had one child at home at the time of the 1901 census. This was her grandson Arthur, who was aged 11.
